House Plant Nest is a site about keeping houseplants alive and well indoors: how much to water, how much light a plant really needs, when and how to repot, what to do about pests, and which plants suit a small apartment, a dark corner or a busy week.
It is written for people who own a few plants, or want to, and keep running into the same questions: why are the leaves turning yellow, is this pot too big, is that window bright enough. The answers are meant to be short, plain and something you can check yourself.
Who writes it
The guides are written under the name Avery Callahan. House Plant Nest is run by a small team that writes under pen names, and Avery Callahan is the name on our plant care guides. We are not botanists or horticulturists, and the site never says otherwise.
How a guide is made
- The sources come first. Every guide starts from published sources that know the subject: university extension services, botanical gardens and horticultural societies, and the research they cite.
- The sources are named. Each guide lists the sources it used, so you can read them yourself.
- Every guide is checked against them. Before a guide goes up, each claim in it is checked against those sources. Where the sources disagree, the guide says so.
- No made-up experience. A guide never claims a test, a plant or a story we did not have.
- Corrections are made. If you find a mistake, tell us and we fix the guide and note the change.
How the site pays for itself
Today it does not: House Plant Nest carries no ads, no affiliate links and no sponsored posts. If that ever changes, the pages that carry them will say so, and the privacy page will change first.
